Interview
Joy Berdina
When did you first pick a camera?
Before I could even pronounce the word camera correctly, I already grabbed one! My two little nieces were assigned to pose like models ( I already had a little director inside of me) and I used my desk lamp for lighting. I think my interest for photography started because of my father. He always made photo’s of me and my sisters, especially when we were on holiday. I still have his camera lenses from his old camera and I’m actually still using it fo portraits. Although I was into photography since a very young age, I was never aware that it was a career option. As a child I wanted to become a professional dancer, because I practiced ballet and modern dance. Well, that failed epically because I love pizza too much.
Do you have specific influences in your work?
Most of the time I get inspired by the models themselves, some models have a specific vibe or look that gives me an idea.
What would you say is your signature as a photographer?
My signature as a photographer is purity, most of the time I use natural light combined with shadows and sunlight. I’m always aiming for a relaxed setting that radiates calmness, freedom and openness.
How did you get started?
2015 was my year. I found my focus and picked up on a typical style of photography, a specific vibe combined with beautiful women.
What’s been the most surprisingly element of your job?
It’s a beautiful thing when you become good friends with some of the people you work with. Also you get to see beautiful places, like a romantic house, a beautiful beach or just an amazing place in the shade somewhere random.
Any other artistic medium you are interested to explore?
Not for now. Maybe when I’m older but now I love to focus on photography. I am a music lover and the piano gets every time, but to say I want to become a piano virtuoso would be highly exaggerated.
What gets you off - literally and figuratively?
I get really excited when there’s beautiful light with some shadow to play with. I think that really gets me off.
You’re based out of Amsterdam – are there certain things in the city that has influenced you? What makes Amsterdam a special place for you?
Yes definitely, this city is full of creative and talented people but also a lot of different nationalities who all can learn from each other, I really like that. It never gets bored and there is a lot of good food, what I also really like. For me it feels as a holiday most of the time.
Film or digital?
Digital, depending on the mood and vibe that I want to put down. If there is more of a vintage vibe obviously film.
If you could choose any era to work in which would it be? Why?
40s or 50s in that period of time: I love the fashion of women and men the most. I would love to do a photoshoot in that kind of vibe, style and setting.
Who or what would be your dream subject to shoot?
I would love to do a shoot with Sabrina Claudio. She is natural, pure and one of a kind.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Difficult one. But I would say confidence. I see a lot of people who put the “confidence mask” on who are in fact maybe a little insecure. The thing is, we all have our insecurities, and its okay to show them. You don’t have to be confident all the time. Especially on photos, I find vulnerability the most beautiful thing to capture. I literally see someone open up to me through my lens.
