When did you first pick up a camera?
The very first time I got a proper camera in my hand was 7 years ago. I was in Australia, did a semester abroad (which turned out didn’t have a lot to do with studying) and this guy told me that I had a very good eye for perspectives - he was just talking about photos I did with my iPhone 3. I don’t even really know if this actually was the start of everything but I never forgot this conversation. As chance would have it, one of my housemates back then had a proper DSLR with him and that was the very first contact with a camera. I remember thinking - well, that can’t be difficult, I just have to push the button and that’s it right? As you may can imagine, the photos were proper black. I didn’t have a clue what ISO or shutter speed was, and I was like damn, this is way more complex than I thought it would be. Back in Germany, I moved in a shared flat and voila, my flatmate also got a DSLR. I started to borrow his camera and then it happened - I hopelessly fell in love with photography. How it made me feel, how it could completely distract me from reality, how it was possible to create something completely new. It changed my life in a way I can’t even explain, it’s this feeling…
Do you have specific influences in your work?
Actually not really specific. I love browsing around on the internet, exploring artists, people, places and just losing myself in the process. Same counts for real life.
What would you say is your signature as a photographer?
I would say it’s the 70s/80s/90s influence in combination with all the fierce women I get to work with. (It organically happened that I mostly shoot with women and I love it!)
My motto: be badass + big hearted. I’m always trying to create this vibe on set for and with anyone involved. For me, it is most important that everyone feels comfortable and safe, especially the superwoman in front of the camera. I wanna connect with her, build trust on both sides. In my work, no matter if it is for a fashion brand, cosmetics or an editorial, my goal is to catch her personality and mix it up with a little badass + big hearted attitude (which I believe every woman has!). If I was a bartender, this would be my secret ingredient.🍸
How did you get started?
In the beginning, it was really just a wonderful hobby, I got to get myself into the technique etc... I was studying business administration during this time, so I didn’t really take the camera out for a walk that often (purchased it by auction on eBay for like €250, which was a shitload of money for me as an always broke student).
2 years later, I got my first photography jobs and pretty much did everything - I couldn’t believe that I really earned money with something I loved so much.
After finishing my studying, I decided to straight away work as a freelance photographer. No part time job or anything else because I knew this would just distract me from getting into photography deeper. I strongly believe that putting yourself into risky, demanding situations always teaches you the most in many ways!
What’s been the most surprising element of your job?
Surprisingly, there is nothing surprising. I got into this scene so fucking unplanned and fast, I didn’t really have any idea of how all this would be. Now, everything truly feels natural to me. I am one happy little fish in the water.🐠
Any other artistic mediums you are interested in exploring?
Camcorders! (Already on it!) Love the look and the authentic way to get to this type of vintage vibe. Not 3481 filters on it, just straight out of the camera.
What gets you off - literally and figuratively?
Literally - traveling to magical places and being able to work there, HAVE to mention Capetown here♥️. Also pommes 🍟.
Figuratively - memories of these places and experiences I was able to create with my beloved ones.
You’re based out of Berlin - are there certain things in the city that has influenced you? What makes Berlin a special place for you?
I believe that moving to Berlin in Summer 2017 was the proper beginning of the way I am shooting now. It was 100% an active decision to move here for the love of my life (the camera in this case, love my boyfriend a lot though 😋♥️).
Big B is a mecca for artistic people, everyone is so hungry to create - I love that a lot about this city - it’s easy to work together with other inspiring people who share your vision. Berlin also means freedom to me, especially in summer.
Film or digital?
Film, always.
If you could choose any era to work in which it would be? Why?
I’d say I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be, I’m in love with the 70s, 80s and 90s aesthetics and enjoy hopping between them. Combining modern elements with old school ones is so much fun. What a privilege to have all of them!
Who or what would be your dream subject to shoot?
Rihanna - mother of badass and big hearted!
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Clarity - you don’t always have to know where to go or what to do, what is right and what is wrong. Sometimes it is wonderful to just let it flow, take risks and see this process as a big source of inspiration and personal progress.
It’s the same in photography, you can never fully plan the outcome of a photo - and that’s the beauty of it.
